This Just In!

Tustin Library – August 18, 2008

Empty the station wagon or borrow a truck!  The Friends of the Library hold their end-of-summer Book Sale on August 23 and 24.  Members only get a head start on Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to Noon!  We’re already getting calls from far and wide asking for details on the sale. Two bucks a bag?  Who can resist?  And all proceeds fund Library programs and materials for you and your family.

Teen Advisory Board (TAB) members held their last hurrah on the 15th, celebrating with pancakes and pizza.  That’s what they asked for; that’s what they got.  Now graduating seniors are off to new challenges.  We will miss their high energy and team spirit!

Two of our pages are taking off, as well.  Trevor Caldwell will be attending Harvey Mudd College at the Claremont Consortium, and Robert Rangel is taking on more responsibility at his Middle School position.  They did an awesome job, and we wish them well.  Part-time page positions are now open; ask for an application at the Circulation Desk.

Two very special programs for infants and cruisers with their parents or caregivers begin September 11, 2008.  Baby-Bebé is a storytime program for the youngest children, 2-12 months old, exciting their love of reading with songs, stretches, music, nursery rhymes, and picture books.  Bring a baby blanket so we can show you some gentle baby massage and yoga techniques that will bring you and baby a sweet sense of peace.

Storytimes for Little Acorns, for cruisers age 12-24 months old and their parents or caregivers, also has a September start.  This is a more traditional lapsit program, with a twist!  Come bounce, sing, and play with us.  Group size is very limited, and reservations are required.  Please call 544-7725 to reserve your place.

Tustin Tellers resume PJ Storytimes on Tuesday evening, September 9, from 7:00 – 7:30 p.m.   For unattended children ages 3-6 years old, this special storytime is filled with singing, rhyming, stretching, and storytelling.  The children are engaged for about 30 minutes, so parents have just enough time to talk with our Children’s Librarian and gather a few good reads to take home.  Registration is required.  Children who are unhappy without their parents at their side may be reunited with them during storytime, so parents need to stay close by.

Look for special Family Reading Night events, hosted here at the Library for selected elementary schools, starting in October.  Who said back-to-school was boring?  Not us!

High school students who need community service credits and enjoy typical library tasks, TAB membership, helping elementary students with their homework, or launching our newest program, KidsCrafts, should call 544-7725 or come to the Info. Desk for a Teen Volunteer application.  Work at the Library in a volunteer capacity often counts for employment experience, and should certainly be listed on college and employment applications.

We’re looking for a few good men…and women to share start-up of the Gadabouts Travel Club and the Ciné Society Movie Club.  World travelers, welcome.  Would-be travelers, also welcome.  Armchair travel is a growing hobby, and we want you to get in on the ground floor at the Tustin Library!

We’re planning to show travel films, share trip slides and photos, and get insights from experienced travelers to make planning our next adventure so much better.  If you have travel adventures to share, please call the Library.

Stars and starlets, welcome.  Movie mavens and star fans, welcome.  If you like movies made from books or just the magic of the film experience, please join us as we launch the Tustin Library Ciné Society.    Suggest the films we should bring in or arrange to see together.  Read the books that cast a thousand stars.  Sign-up sheets are available at the Info Desk.  For more information, call Sharon or Nancy at 544-7725.

The ladies of the Anaheim Angels Strike Force will present a craft and story program for children at the Tustin Library on Thursday, July 31 at 11:00 a.m.  This is the Library’s Grand Finale to our Summer Reading Celebration 2008!  Today is the last day for our Summer Reading Celebration readers to claim their prizes.  Adults in the reading celebration will have their raffle tickets drawn and will be called by our staff.

The wait is over!   At 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2008, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, a division of Hachette Book Group USA, will release the most anticipated novel of the year — Breaking Dawn.

Teens are invited to the “Breaking Dawn” Party at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 1, at the Tustin Library.

If you receive, by some nefarious means, a spoiler copy, the author asks her fans to please not read it.  Breaking Dawn was meant to be experienced in a certain way,” writes the author, “and I would hate for someone to get that experience ruined by seeing something online they didn’t want to see.”  No worries here.  The Tustin Library will never break a sacred trust with an author!

“Stephenie Meyer has written a dazzling grand finale to an epic love story,” says her editor.  Undoubtedly legions of new readers will now discover the saga that has already captivated millions around the world.  Meyer’s fans will have plenty to keep them occupied.

Mark your calendars now for the next Friends of the Library Book Sale on Saturday and Sunday, August 21 and 22.  Members of the FOTL get first dibs at all the fabulous bargains on Saturday morning, 10:00 a.m.-12:00.  Then the doors swing open for the general public.  The sale continues on Sunday from noon to 4:00 p.m.  Proceeds fund the variety of programs the Library offers to children, teens, adults, and families.

Thanks to the Friends, the Library was able to make a generous donation of books to the Tustin Family and Youth Center.  Children’s Librarian Mary Pezzetti made two popular stops for stories at the Center for summer camp kids.

The Adults-only Murder Mystery Party at the Tustin Library on

Friday, July 25th, left the station, evaded the Nazis, and solved the murder case, in four short hours.  You missed it?  Talk to Nancy about hosting another episode.

The Library said “thank you” to the Tustin Police Department on Tuesday, July 29.  We appreciate our community police force, so cookies and lemonade were our small way of showing our gratitude.

The Tustin Library is saying “hello” and “good-bye” to valued staff members.  Julie Herron, a long-time Library Assistant, and Wendy Ying, a Library Clerk, retired at the end of the month.  We miss them already.

Joining the Tustin Library team is Sara Seymour, part-time Clerk, recently promoted, and Chloe Faust, full-time Clerk, a recent transfer from our Westminster Branch.  Please welcome them when you visit.

The Last Train from Paris

Tustin Library’s Who Done It? Mystery Night had its librarians running all over the place as they hosted “The Last Train from Paris” with a gregarious group of would-be suspects, investigators, and accusers.

Doors opened on Friday, July 25th at 6:00 p.m. with Gestapo officer Sharon Nicola checking documents for authorized entry.  Kim Leaming, conductor of The Last Train, welcomed invited guests to appetizers, prize entries, the distribution of secret envelopes, and a seat on the escaping train.

At 6:15 p.m., all guests followed Nancy Pe’a, the passenger train’s concierge, to the Library’s community room for a briefing on who’s who, who’s where, what’s that, and the rules of play.

After each round of play, the groups gathered in the dining car for another meal course.  Polite small talk between appetizers and entrées was really an opportunity for sleuths to sniff out villains, culprits, and bad guys (or girls, as the case may be), maintain the appearance of innocence, and pin the rap on somebody else.

The Library was increasingly chaotic as accusations were flung around, confounding everyone but the most nefarious characters in the case.  By the time dessert and coffee were served, almost everyone was a suspect and only a few sleuths had the murderer pegged.  Passengers were so hilariously confused that nothing but key lime pie and assorted cream puffs could calm their nerves.

After a grueling 3 hours, passengers gathered in the smoking car to consider all accusations and the evidence to support them.   Finally the last page of the game manual was read aloud, revealing the culprit to be none other than….

Suffice it to say only one team figured out most of the facts and the motive, but could not pinpoint the murderer.   All guests but one were safely delivered to their Paris destination.  The Tustin Library’s Last Train to Paris experience received the Kudo d’Excellence Award from passengers for an exciting evening of mystery and mayhem.

–as reported by Nancy Pe’a, concierge extraordinaire to the Commandante de’ 16th Armee de la Republique

Catch the last train to Paris, and help us catch a killer!  It’s all part of the Murder Mystery Party for adults only being held at the Tustin Library on

Friday, July 25, leaving the station promptly at 6:00 p.m.

You must pick up your invitation.  This may be your last chance to escape before the invading Nazi troops descend on fair Paree.  By order of the Commandante of the 16th Armee de la Republique, you are afforded safe passage; but only if you request it at the Library’s Information Desk.

Who done it?  Who is to say?  You must become the role of a lifetime!  Friday, July 25, 6:00 p.m. at the Tustin Library.

Teens are invited to a special review showing of “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” on Saturday, July 26 at 2:00 p.m.  Bring your friends and a pair of jeans to decorate and personalize.  Popcorn and snacks are free.

This is the film that catapulted America Ferrera to fame as Ugly Betty.

Ann Brashares has 4 titles in the traveling pants series, and all are available through the Tustin Library.  In addition to The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, we have The Second Summer of the Sisterhood, Girls in Pants, and Forever in Blue.  In the soon-to-be-released movie, you’ll be able to catch up with Tibby, Lena, Carmen, and Bridget following their first year of college.  Join the Sisterhood at the Tustin Library on Saturday at 2.

Although our summer reading celebration, Catch the Reading Bug, is winding down, the Orkin exterminator team will present a bug program on Monday, July 28, at 11:00 a.m.

The Library is saying “thank you” to the Tustin Police Department on Tuesday, July 29, between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.  When we call for their assistance, they are right there to help us!  Our Library chef/children’s librarian will be baking up our most-requested cookies, and we’ll be pouring lemonade and iced tea on this hot summer day.

That evening adults may join the Sing-Sing Along in the Tustin Library multipurpose room at 7:00 p.m.  When did you last vocalize, harmonize, or hootenanny?  It’s been that long?  Time to join us and sing!

The Anaheim Angles Strike Force team will present a program and craft for children in the Summer Reading Celebration on Thursday, July 31 at 11:00 a.m.  This is the Tustin Library’s Grand Finale to Summer Reading Celebration 2008.  Readers who met their goal may come to the Library to claim their prizes and paperback books.  Adults in the reading celebration will have their raffle tickets drawn and will be called by our staff.

The Tustin Library is saying “hello” and “good-bye” to valued staff members.  Julie Herron, a long-time Library Assistant, has retired, and Wendy Ying, a Library Clerk, will retire at the end of the month.  We miss them already.

Joining the Tustin Library team is Sara Seymour, part-time Clerk, recently promoted, and Chloe Faust, full-time Clerk, a recent transfer from our Westminster Branch.  Please welcome them when you visit.

You may catch “Traveling Pants” at the movies, but you won’t catch our

traveling pages at the Library.  Why?  Because they’re always putting books back as soon as they are returned so you can take them out again.

If you see a “duded up cart” on Thursday, July 24, look for a page nearby and say “Hi!”  It’s our way of giving them a round of applause for a job well done!

Desk.

Now that we actually have a rocking chair to sit in, we’re actively recruiting senior citizens for “Rockiń and Readiń Grammy and Gramps.”  If you are a grandparent, look like a grandparent, or just FEEL like a grandparent, and would like to read to young children at the Tustin Library while gliding in our most comfortable rocking chair, please call Grammy Sharon the Librarian at 544-7725 to sign yourself up.  Little children will love you for it!

Library’s All-Out Reading Fun-for-All

Wahines, (ladies) grab your grass skirt and glide over to the Tustin Library on Wednesday evening, June 18.  The Art of the Hula will be presented by Kalua from 7-8:00 p.m.   Of course, hảne (men) are welcome to learn and dance as well.  Kalua will have your hips swaying and your hands saying good things about the islands by the end of the evening.  Learn the music, the culture, and the dance.  This free program is appropriate for teens and adults.

Summer Reading Celebration—our all-out reading fun-for-all kicks off on Monday, June 23.  Special programs for the youngest children (who must be read to), for school-age kids, for teens, and for adults are planned.  Join us for the first family event, Tawney Bubbles’ balloon show at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24, at the Clifton C. Miller Community Center, next door in the City Hall complex.  Remember, all Library programs are absolutely free.

Yes!  This summer we’ve got a reading extravaganza designed especially for adults, with a full schedule of enticing programs.   Ever tried MadGab?  Bowling Night at the Wii?  Happy Hour Poetry open mic night?  All this and we’re serving refreshments, too.  Prize packages await ravenous readers.  Sign-ups start June 23.

Tustin residents love their Library.  At the annual Chili Cook-Off, most asked questions were, do you need volunteers, do you accept book donations, and when will the new Library be finished?  Thanks for your interest.  And here are some answers.

We’re revving up for our summer reading celebration and for more targeted programs for young children.  Adult visitors have been giving us lots of ideas for programs they would enjoy.  So, we now have a volunteer Volunteer Coordinator, Carole Blanscet.  Whether you like short tasks like shelving, dusting, mending, or watering plants; enjoy driving for day care delivery or shut-in service; or like reading or storytelling with youngsters, we have a spot for you.  We have the friendliest Friends and the most vivacious Volunteers.  If you have the talent and time, we have the task.

We do accept book donations.  Books need to be useable either in our collection or for resale through the Friends book store.  Books that are mildewed, shabby, or outdated with no historic value meet the same sad end here they would meet at your home.  For sharp and saleable donations, we’ll be happy to provide a tax receipt.  Then the Library benefits by adding needed copies to our collection or by reaping the rewards from the Friends Book Store and Super Sales.

The new Library, growing daily in the lot next door, should be finished and open for service around this time next summer.  Tustin residents are fortunate in that they have never been without library service during the creation of this grand new facility.  For more information, the exterior view of the new building is on display in the Tustin Library lobby, and the City provides new brochures detailing the building’s progress from time to time.

We share your anticipation and excitement.  Thanks for visiting us.

We do have just a few “Inaugural Edition” Chili Cook-off cookbooks available, FREE, for a $50 patron membership to the Friends of the Tustin Library, or $10 to support the Library.  The FOTL is the support group that funds our free programs for patrons. Enjoy a pot of Cleopatra’s favorite chili, or try the one Rami Payne and her husband enjoy.  Friends and staff contributed to this awesome array of recipes—not to be missed!  Your donations help the Friends help the Library help you.  Thanks for your support!
