Does my head look big in this?

July 16th, 2007
Wow… That’s the first thing I have to say about this book. Randa Abdel-Fattah’ Does My Head Look Big in This is a wonderfully charming look at the life of a modern Muslim teenager in Australia. The writing is charming and the situations are incredibly life like. I was drawn into this story about a young girl who decides to wear the hijab “full time” and how she deals with society’s reaction to her. In no way preachy, this book helps the reader to understand what Islam is like from the inside for your average western Muslim teen. I definitely recommend this book to anyone.

The Lightning Thief

July 7th, 2007

Percy Jackson always knew that he was different. A mediocre student, he always figured that his short attention span made him stand out. He quickly learned, however, that ADHD is actually the modern manifestation of what once helped heroes stay alive.

Rick Riordan creates a wonderful blend of action, plot, and a heavy dose of Greek Mythology in this series that shows what would happen if the Greek Gods were still around in the 20th century.

Kids turn out to see how to make ice cream!

July 7th, 2007

Last Thursday we had a wonderful turn out for our “How to Make Ice Cream” party. Almost 80 people showed up to shake it up for 5 minutes and make wonderful, creamy ice cream. If you’d like to try it, the recipe is below. I’d advise setting up a couple of good, hyper songs to help you keep going for the whole time.

What You Need
· 1 tablespoon Sugar
· 1/2 cup Milk or half & half
· 1/4 teaspoon Vanilla
· 6 tablespoons Rock salt
· 1 pint-size Ziploc plastic bag
· 1 gallon-size Ziploc plastic bag
· Ice cubes

How To Make It
1. Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt.
2. Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.
3. Place the small bag inside the large one and seal again carefully.
4. Double check that all your bags are sealed.
5. Shake until mixture is ice cream, about 5 minutes.
6. Wipe off top of small bag, then open carefully and enjoy!

Requiem for an Assassin

June 22nd, 2007

John Rain is at the top of his profession. No one can do what he can with the outcomes seeming so inevitable. He is an assassin whose specialty is “natural” death. In this series by Barry Eisler, we are taken into the world of the high stakes freelance assassination. We learn how John trains, lives, and loves. We also discover how difficult and lonely it is for him just to stay alive. The latest book in this series, Requiem for an Assassin has just been released in hardback. It is well written, intriguing, and an excellent read. Please note, however, that the series does not seem to translate well into audio because the heavy emphasis on internal dialog and perception. To learn more about the series go to Barry Eisler’s website at http://www.barryeisler.com/requiem.php.

Rover

June 14th, 2007

Being a dog lover, I have to admit I was predisposed to like this book about an intelligent hound and his young female owner who are captured by Vikings. Given that predilection, I was still pleasantly surprised by the book Rover by Jackie French. The story flows well and stays relatively true to the sagas on which it is based. Although I generally find footnotes fascinating, I did think that the notes in this book were its only downfall. They do help the reader realize that the book is historical; however, I found them distracting. Rover is a fun read for adults, but is aimed at readers in the 5th grade and above. Because of a few violent scenes, I would not recommend it for children younger than 10.

The Thirteenth Tale

June 11th, 2007
Vida Winter, famous author, has never told the truth about her life. She has told nineteen different versions of her life to reporters in the past two years. So Margaret Lea, amature biographer and bookstore maven, is understandably doubtful when she is approached by Ms. Winter to write the “true” story of her life. Why did she approach an unknown? Is she really ready to tell the truth? Diane Setterfield’s novel, The Thirteenth Tale provides the reader with a number of refreshingly strong, intelligent female leads in this mysterious ghost story. The book is an excellent read for adults and teens alike and won the 2007 Alex Award for best crossover novel.
