I am fairly certain that this photograph memorializes the completion of a section of Pacific Coast Highway between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach in 1926. According to accounts that I have read, during the "ribbon cutting" ceremony, Douglas Fairbanks portrayed the god "Vulcan" and his wife Mary Pickford portrayed the "Spirit of Progress." Obviously, Fairbanks is the man with the hammer and anvil; Pickford is the woman at right. Note that the little girl at left is wearing a sash that says "Miss Newport Beach." My guess is that some among the audience are actor friends of the couple.

I'm fairly certain that this photo memorializes completion of a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. A ceremony, involving Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, occurred in 1926. According to accounts that I have found, Fairbanks played the god Vulcan--hence the hammer and anvil--and Pickford played the "Spirit of Progress." She is, of course, the woman at right.
