[James Harvey Irvine, Sr. and Harry Baechtel on velocipedes, 1888]
In 1888, James Harvey Irvine, Sr. (1867-1947) (at left with his friend, Harry Baechtel) rode from San Francisco to San Diego on high-wheeled bicycles known as velocipedes. This was a difficult undertaking given the rough and rutted roads that they traveled on. Irvine was 19 years old at the time.
