The Marine Corps takeover signaled the end of the "big ranch". In an epic roundup, some 12,000 head of Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores cattle were corralled for the market, or driven north to the O'Neill portion of the ranch in Orange County, which became known as the Rancho Mission Viejo.
